What is it?
What is Metro Science Fest?
Your child’s first journey into space. Nine hands-on activities themed around Space Explorers – whip a cloth from under the cups and watch inertia hold them still, wrestle a spinning gyroscope, find out what you weigh on Jupiter, stare down an infinity well, throw three coloured shadows at once and leave your own shadow stuck to the wall. All of it guided by trained STEM facilitators. Best for curious kids between 3 and 15.

Facilitators pitch each activity to the child in front of them, so a five-year-old and a twelve-year-old both leave having built something.

Key highlights of the event
Fun with Inertia
Whip the cloth away and the cups stay put. A hands-on go at the law that keeps everything where it is until something pushes it.
Gyroscope Challenge
Spin it up and try to tip it over. A spinning wheel fights back, which is exactly how a spacecraft keeps itself pointed the right way.
Your Weight in Space
Step on and find out what you would weigh on Mars, on the Moon, on Jupiter. Same child, six very different numbers.
Infinity Well
Look in and the lights fall away forever. Two mirrors, one trick of the light, and a tunnel with no bottom.
Colour Shadow
Stand in front of three coloured lamps and cast three shadows at once, each one a different colour.
Capture Shadow
Strike a pose, the wall flashes, and your shadow stays behind on it. Glow pigment holding the shape you left.
Fun Science Shows
A facilitator up front with the loud end of science, run through the afternoon on weekdays.
Workshops
Sit down, build something, take it home. Smaller groups than the weekend floor, so every child gets their hands on it.
Paper Project
Paper, folds and a bit of physics – the cheapest material in the building, doing things nobody expects.
